The Turkish Statistical Institute announced the “Labor Force Statistics 2022” data.

Accordingly, the number of unemployed across the country decreased by 337 thousand people last year compared to 2021 and became 3 million 582 thousand people.

Unemployment rate decreased by 1.6 percentage points to 10.4 percent last year compared to the previous year.

In 2021, the unemployment rate was 12 percent and the number of unemployed was announced as 3 million 919 thousand people.

The youth unemployment rate, which includes the 15-24 age group, decreased by 3.2 points in 2022 compared to the previous year and became 19.4 percent. The unemployment rate in this age group was calculated as 16.4 percent for men and 25.2 percent for women.

In this period, the number of employed people increased by 1 million 955 thousand people to 30 million 752 thousand people, and the employment rate increased by 2.3 points to 47.5 percent. This rate was determined as 65 percent for men and 30.4 percent for women.

Last year, 4 million 866 thousand people were employed in agriculture, 6 million 663 thousand people in industry, 1 million 846 thousand people in construction and 17 million 378 thousand people in service sectors. Compared to the previous year, the number of employed persons decreased by 82 thousand in the agriculture sector, increased by 520 thousand in the industrial sector, 69 thousand in the construction sector and 1 million 450 thousand in the service sector.

15.8 percent of those employed were in agriculture, 21.7 percent in industry, 6 percent in construction and 56.5 percent in the service sector. Compared to the previous year, the share of the industrial sector in employed persons increased by 0.4 points, the share of the service sector increased by 1.2 points, while the share of the agricultural sector decreased by 1.4 points and the share of the construction sector decreased by 0.2 points.

The workforce was 34 million 334 thousand people last year, and the labor force participation rate was 53.1%. The labor force participation rate was 71.4% for men and 35.1% for women.

The rate of underemployment due to time, potential labor force and the unemployed, decreased by 3.1 percentage points compared to the previous year and decreased to 21.3 percent in 2022. While the combined rate of time-related underemployment and the unemployed was 14.6 percent, the combined rate of the unemployed and potential workforce was 17.4 percent.


The cities with the lowest unemployment rates are Kastamonu, Çankırı and Sinop.

Last year, the region with the highest unemployment rate was “Van, Muş, Bitlis, Hakkari” with 19.2 percent, while the region with the lowest unemployment rate was “Kastamonu, Çankırı, Sinop” with 6.2 percent.

The highest employment rate was realized in “Tekirdağ, Edirne, Kırklareli” with 54.1 percent. The lowest employment rate was calculated in “Mardin, Batman, Şırnak, Siirt” with 33.8 percent.

The highest labor force participation rate was seen in “Tekirdağ, Edirne, Kırklareli” with 58.7 percent. The region with the lowest labor force participation rate was “Mardin, Batman, Şırnak, Siirt” with 41.5 percent.
