According to the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD) data, total sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles in Turkey increased by 55.2 percent in the January-March period of 2023 compared to the same period of the previous year, and amounted to 235 thousand 971.

In the said period, automobile sales increased by 50.1 percent to 175 thousand 421 and light commercial vehicle sales increased by 71.9 percent to 60 thousand 550 levels.


Electric car overtakes autogas car

In the Turkish automobile market, in the first three months of this year, gasoline cars took the first place with 117 thousand 650 sales, while diesel cars took the second place with 31 thousand 465 units.

Hybrid car sales were 18,874 and autogas car sales were 2,762.

Electric car sales, on the other hand, surpassed autogas car sales with 4,670 units.

In the first quarter of this year, gasoline car sales increased by 40.6 percent, diesel car sales increased by 75.2 percent compared to the same period of 2022, while autogas car sales decreased by 1.4 percent.

In this period, hybrid car sales increased by 66.4 percent and electric car sales by 335.2 percent.


The share of electricity approached 3 percent

The share of gasoline cars, which was 71.6 percent in January-March 2022, decreased to 67.1 percent in the same period of this year.

In the said period, the share of diesel cars increased from 15.4 percent to 17.9 percent, while the share of auto gas cars decreased from 2.4 percent to 1.6 percent.

The share of electric cars in total sales increased from 0.9 percent to 2.7 percent, and the share of hybrid cars increased from 9.7 percent to 10.8 percent.


New electric models keep coming

Many brands offered their ambitious models, which they announced before, for sale in the Turkish market during the year.

In addition, Chinese companies continue to show interest in the Turkish market. In addition to the Skywell brand, the electric models of Chery, which has returned to Turkey, are expected to be on the roads of Turkey.

In addition to electric cars, the number of hybrid motor cars, which are another part of electric mobility, is also increasing. The market share of “green cars” is expected to increase further with Togg’s entry into the market and developments in the world.
