Airway traffic, which has decreased to a great extent during the COVID-19 epidemic, has entered a rapid recovery process since the beginning of 2022 in the world and in Turkey. The increase in air traffic and passenger numbers, which started in the first months of last year with the decrease of the effect of the epidemic, continued in the first quarter of 2023.

Compared to 2022, significant increases were seen in the number of passengers hosted at Istanbul and Sabiha Gökçen airports in the first three months of this year.

According to the information compiled from the website of the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI), 3 million 618 thousand 921 passengers traveled from domestic lines and 12 million 911 thousand 550 passengers from international lines in the January-March period of this year at Istanbul Airport. In the first 3 months of 2023, a total of 16 million 530 thousand 471 passengers used Istanbul Airport.

In the same period of the previous year, 11 million 414 thousand 230 people used the Istanbul Airport, 2 million 923 thousand 503 passengers traveled domestically and 8 million 490 thousand 727 people traveled from international lines.

In Istanbul Airport, which increased the number of passengers by 5 million 116 thousand 241 compared to last year, this increase was 45 percent.


The increase in Sabiha Gökçen continues

In the January-March period of this year, 3 million 712 thousand 598 passengers on domestic lines and 4 million 208 thousand 774 passengers on international lines traveled to Sabiha Gökçen Airport. A total of 7 million 921 thousand 372 passengers flew from the airport in the first quarter of this year.

In the first quarter of last year, a total of 6 million 362 thousand 563 passengers, 3 million 236 thousand 915 domestic and 3 million 125 thousand 648 international passengers, were hosted at the airport.

In the first quarter of this year, the number of passengers increased by 1 million 558 thousand 809 compared to the same period of the previous year, and this increase was 25 percent.


The number of passengers at the two airports increased by 6 million 675 thousand 50

In the first quarter of this year, a total of 24 million 451 thousand 843 passengers traveled from Istanbul’s two airports, 7 million 331 thousand 519 on domestic flights and 17 million 120 thousand 324 on international flights.

In the same period of last year, the total number of passengers was determined as 17 million 776 thousand 793.

Istanbul airports increased the number of passengers by 6 million 675 thousand 50 in the January-March period this year compared to the period of the previous year. Accordingly, the increase in the number of passengers at Istanbul airports in the first quarter of the year was approximately 38 percent.


Istanbul airports increased their flights by 28 percent

The increase in flights at Istanbul airports in parallel with the number of passengers in the first quarter of this year was also reflected in the statistics.

In the January-March period of 2023, a total of 113 thousand 845 flights, 27 thousand 845 domestic and 86 thousand international flights, were organized at Istanbul Airport.

At the airport, where 81 thousand 876 flights were made in the first 3 months of last year, 31 thousand 969 flights were seen compared to the same period of this year.

In the first quarter of this year, a total of 50 thousand 589 flights took place at Sabiha Gökçen Airport. Of these flights, 24 thousand 45 were made domestic and 26 thousand 544 international flights.

While a total of 44 thousand 177 flights were made at Sabiha Gökçen Airport in the same period of 2022, there was an increase of 6 thousand 412 flights in the first 3 months of this year.

While a total of 5 thousand 976 flights were made at Atatürk Airport in the same period, on domestic and international lines, 6 thousand 612 flights were carried out in the first three months of last year. The number of passengers at this airport decreased by 636 compared to last year.

According to these data, a total of 170 thousand 410 flights were made from Istanbul airports in the first quarter of the year. In the same period last year, 132 thousand 665 flights were organized.

In the first quarter of 2023, the number of flights at Istanbul airports increased by 28 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 37,745.
