The results of the ‘Household Information Technologies Usage Survey-2023’ conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) have been announced.

According to the results of the household information technologies usage survey; In 2023, the rate of households with Internet access from home increased by 1.4 points compared to the previous year and became 95.5 percent.


The rate of individuals using the Internet was 87.1 percent

While the rate of internet usage was 85.0 percent in 2022 for individuals in the 16-74 age group, it became 87.1 percent in 2023. Internet usage rate in 2023 by gender; 90.9 percent in men and 83.3 percent in women.


The rate of individuals using e-government services was 73.9 percent.

The rate of individuals using official websites and applications for private purposes and benefiting from public services over the Internet in the last 12 months was 73.9 percent. Among the purposes of using e-government services, accessing personal information stored about oneself by official authorities or public services ranked first with 69.6 percent. This was followed by making an appointment or making a reservation from public institutions or public services with 51.3 percent and obtaining information from websites belonging to public institutions with 48.2 percent.


The rate of purchasing or ordering goods or services over the Internet increased to 49.5 percent.

The rate of purchasing goods or services or ordering (e-commerce) for private use on the Internet by individuals using the Internet in the last 12 months was 46.2 percent in 2022 and 49.5 percent in 2023. According to gender, the rate of purchasing or ordering goods or services over the Internet was 52.4 percent for men and 46.6 percent for women. When this ratio is analyzed according to the last time of purchasing or ordering goods or services; It was observed that 38.0 percent of individuals purchased or ordered goods or services in the last 3 months (first 3 months of 2023).


75.5 percent of individuals engaged in e-commerce purchased clothing, shoes and accessories

75.5 percent of individuals who purchased or ordered goods or services over the Internet in the first 3 months of 2023 purchased clothing, shoes and accessories. This is followed by deliveries from restaurants, fast food chains and catering companies with 47.6 percent, food products with 37.1 percent, cosmetics, beauty and health products with 32.2 percent, and cleaning products and personal care materials with 28.8 percent. he did.

When these individuals are examined by gender; 69.3 percent of men are clothing, shoes and accessories, 48.9 percent are deliveries from restaurants, fast food chains, catering companies and 37.2 percent are food products; 81.7 percent of women bought clothing, shoes and accessories, 46.4% of them bought cosmetics, beauty and health products and 46.4% of them bought deliveries from restaurants, fast food chains and catering companies.


30.7 percent of individuals engaged in e-commerce purchased a movie or TV series service

When the individuals who purchased or ordered goods or services over the internet in the first 3 months of 2023 are analyzed according to the digital content they have purchased or subscribed to, 30.7 percent of these individuals have purchased movies or TV series. This was followed by music streaming or download services (30.1 percent) and software downloads (including version upgrades) 17.7 percent.

When the individuals who purchased or ordered goods or services over the Internet in the first 3 months of 2023 are analyzed according to the online services they purchased, 25.0 percent of these individuals have transportation services (bus, train, plane and ship tickets) via the website or application. ) he bought. This was followed by internet or mobile phone connection subscription with 15.2 percent and ticket purchases for cultural events (cinema, theatre, concert, fair, etc.) with 13.5%.


The rate of individuals experiencing problems in e-commerce transactions was 27.1 percent.

In 2023, the rate of individuals who encountered a problem in their purchases made through the website or mobile application in the last 3 months was 27.1 percent. The most encountered problems were slower than stated delivery (13.6 percent) and incorrect or damaged goods/service delivery (11.1 percent), respectively.


The rate of individuals who perform learning activities over the Internet was 18.7 percent.

The rate of individuals who have carried out learning activities for educational, vocational or private purposes over the internet in the last 3 months increased by 2.8 points compared to the previous year and became 18.7 percent in 2023. This rate was 18.1% for men and 19.4 percent for women.


84.9 percent of individuals used WhatsApp

The most used social media and messaging applications by individuals were WhatsApp with 84.9 percent, YouTube with 69.0 percent and Instagram with 61.4 percent. When the most used social media and messaging applications are examined by gender; It was observed that men use WhatsApp with 88.7%, YouTube with 72.6% and Instagram applications with 63.5%, women with WhatsApp with 81.1%, YouTube with 65.4% and Instagram with 59.3%.


Individuals used various methods to manage access to personal data.

In the last 3 months, the most used method by individuals using the Internet to manage access to personal data was to check the features of websites to ensure the security of personal data with 41.8 percent. This was followed by not allowing the sharing of personal data for advertising purposes with 36.2 percent and reading the privacy policy of the website or applications before giving personal data with 31.1 percent.
