Automotive Industry Association (OSD) announced the production and export numbers and market data for the January-August period of 2023.
Accordingly, in the 8-month period of the year, total automotive production increased by 13 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 943 thousand 609. Automobile production was recorded as 599 thousand 915 units, with an increase of 21 percent. Including tractor production, total production reached 981 thousand 897 units.
In the 8-month period of the year, commercial vehicle production increased by 2 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. During this period, production in the heavy commercial vehicle group increased by 27 percent, while production in the light commercial vehicle group remained parallel to the previous year. In addition, the capacity utilization rate of the automotive industry was 72 in the said period.
Capacity utilization rates on a vehicle group basis were 71 in light vehicles (automobile + light commercial vehicle), 89 in the truck group, 50 in the bus-midibus group and 75 in the tractor.
Exports increased by 17 percent and reached 23.3 billion dollars
In the 8-month period of the year, automotive exports increased by 11 percent in terms of units compared to the same period last year, reaching 656 thousand 750 units. During this period, automobile exports increased by 26 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, while commercial vehicle exports decreased by 8 percent. Tractor exports increased by 13 percent compared to the same period in 2022, reaching 13 thousand 88 units.
According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly, total automotive industry exports maintained its top place in the sectoral export rankings with 16 percent in the 8 months of this year.
According to Uludağ Exporters’ Associations (UIB) data, total automotive exports in the 8 months of this year increased by 17 percent compared to the same period of 2022, reaching 23.3 billion dollars. In euro terms, it increased by 16 percent to 21.5 billion euros. During this period, main industry exports increased by 21 percent and supply industry exports increased by 12 percent in dollar terms.
The market approached 800 thousand units in 8 months
On the other hand, the statement also included the previously announced results of ODMD regarding the automotive market. Accordingly, in the 8 months of 2023, the total market increased by 63 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 788 thousand 197 units.
During this period, the automobile market also increased by 64 percent and reached 582 thousand 419 units. Looking at the commercial vehicle market, in the 8 months of the year, 60 percent growth was achieved in the total commercial vehicle market, 32 percent in the heavy commercial vehicle market, and 66 percent in the light commercial vehicle market, compared to the same period of the previous year.
In the 8 months of 2023, the share of domestic vehicles in automobile sales was 31 percent, and the share of domestic vehicles in the light commercial vehicle market was 50 percent, compared to the same period last year.
